7 Things.

It’s Tuesday, and for whatever reason, Tuesday always seems to be the toughest day of the work week. Client requests are in full swing, the calendar is booking up, and memories of your weekend seem so far away.

Sometimes a little focus brought to everyday things can help. So here are a few of the things I’m currently coveting – little things that are helping to make my week more exciting and more interesting.

At home.

A Pretty Woven Rug.

While we were on vacation in Boston last week, we made a quick trip over to the quaint city of Cambridge – across the water from downtown Boston (home of Harvard University). We made a pitstop into Cambridge’s Urban Outfitters, where we scored this beautiful, bright rug that fits perfectly with the modern / minimalist / south western decor we love so much.

And of course, Robin loves it too!

Homemade Granola bars.

According to Josh, these granola bars are the “best I’ve ever made” – that’s a win! These are so simple and require so few ingredients. They’re quick to make and so delicious! With these types of recipes, it’s easy to swap out ingredients for the things you have on hand. I’ll be experimenting more with this one.

At the office.

A standing desk.

Standing desks are all the rage lately. But after giving one a try for the past few months, I have to say, I now know why.

I’ve been using a Varidesk, which allows you to move your work station up and down depending on if you feel like standing or sitting. My new routine is to stand for the morning, and have a seat in the afternoon. I’m really enjoying it – I’m a fidgety person, so standing gives me the opportunity to move around a little bit, which somehow seems to be helping my concentration on work.

I’m also noticing less pain and tension in my hands and wrists, as well as my neck and back. I wouldn’t want to stand all day, everyday – it is a bit tiring when first starting out. But having the option to switch back and forth is awesome and it feels good!

A great read.

I’m finishing up a great read right now called Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind.

It’s an awesome book about the role of positioning in sales and advertising – what it means, how it’s done, why it’s essential, as well as fantastic examples of companies and brands that do it well, and many that do it poorly.

Everywhere else.

Cute slip-on sneakers.

It’s always hard finding footwear that is functional, doesn’t kill your feet, and actually looks nice. This summer, Vans slip-ons are my answer! I’ve had the lace-up versions in the past, and oddly they’re not nearly as comfortable as the slip-ons. They’re cute, casual, and are a great option for trekking through the city.

I even found these perfect no-show socks to go with them!

MyFitnessPal.

I’ve recently started using MyFitnessPal a bit, and am finding it very interesting so far. Their app is pretty good and is a great tool for keeping on top of diet and nutrition. I’m not typically a calorie counter, but MFP does make it easy to keep general tabs on what I’m consuming and when.

Most interestingly to me are the Nutrition tabs, where after you’ve logged your meals and snacks for the day, you’ll get charts and graphs detailing how much of each important nutrient you’ve consumed. This has lead to a bit of self-discovery, where I’ve noticed things like a relatively persistent deficiency in iron and calcium, as well as an intake of sugar that is too high (I often eat a lot of fruit in the mornings as part of breakfast and snacks; throw a flavoured iced coffee in there and my sugar intake is through the roof. No wonder I suffer the afternoon slump!).

MFP is a great tool for helping me decide where to ‘spend’ my calories according to which vitamins and nutrients I need more of that day.

Read This Thing.

There’s so much to read out there, and lately I’ve found myself in a rut, more or less reading the same types of articles over and over again. That’s where the Read This Thing daily enewsletter comes in.
